4130 is the low-carbon member of the AISI 41xx Cr-Mo family. With 0.28–0.33 % carbon it retains good weldability and formability, which is why it became the standard grade for aircraft fuselage tubing, race-car roll cages and welded fabrications. The 0.15–0.25 % molybdenum gives a strength uplift after heat treatment and resists temper embrittlement.
| Grade | C | Mn | Si | P | S | Cr | Mo |
| 4130 | 0.28-0.33 | 0.40-0.60 | 0.15-0.30 | 0.035Max | 0.040Max | 0.80-1.10 | 0.15-0.25 |
Typical values. 4130 is often supplied normalized for fabrication, then locally heat-treated; we can also supply QT bar direct.

Aerospace — fuselage tubing, engine mounts, brackets
Motorsport — roll cages, chassis, suspension links
Pressure vessels — welded tubing, fittings, flanges
Bicycle & motorcycle — high-end frame tubing
4130 is typically normalized at 870–900 °C to refine the structure after welding, then oil-quenched from 840–870 °C and tempered at 430–560 °C. The grade was designed to be weldable, so welded fabrications are usually normalized after welding to restore properties in the heat-affected zone. Tell us whether you need normalized stock for fabrication or QT bar for direct machining.
Most suppliers in this business are traders who subcontract everything. We run our own processes, which means shorter cycles and one point of accountability when something needs fixing.
Heat treatment shop — quenching and tempering to your target hardness, with furnace charts recorded per batch
Machining shop — rough turning, peeling and cutting to length, so your bar arrives ready for finish machining
Testing — ultrasonic per ASTM A388 / EN 10228-3, hardness mapping across the section, tensile and impact testing
Certification — EN 10204 3.1 as standard, 3.2 available with third-party witness (ABS, BV, CCS, GL)
Export packing — bundled, end-capped and rust-protected for sea freight
A1: The lower carbon (0.28–0.33 %) makes 4130 easier to weld and less prone to cracking in the heat-affected zone. 4140 is stronger but needs pre-heat and careful post-weld heat treatment. For tubular fabrications 4130 is the standard; for solid shafting 4140 is preferred.
A2: For AMS 6360 / 6370 aerospace tube stock we supply with full chemical and mechanical certification, ultrasonic test and step-down microstructure. Contact us with the AMS number and we will confirm.
A3: 4340 adds nickel for higher toughness at large sections — used for landing gear and heavily loaded parts. 4130 is lighter and more weldable — used for airframes and chassis. See our 4340 alloy steel page.
