1: AISI 1018 Steel Introduction
AISI 1018 steel is a low-carbon steel grade from the ASTM A20 standard. As a mild steel with good machinability, weldability, and formability, AISI 1018 is widely used in general engineering applications. It offers moderate strength and toughness, making it suitable for parts such as shafts, pins, rods, spindles, and light-duty structural components.SAE 1018 is typically supplied in a cold-drawn or hot-rolled condition with a hardness range of 126–197 HB. Due to its low carbon content, it is not suitable for heat treatment to achieve high hardness but can be case-hardened for improved wear resistance in surface applications.

In China, AISI 1018 is widely available in various forms, including hot-rolled round bars, flat bars, sheets, and plates, with most steel mills and distributors maintaining stable stock. For cold-drawn 1018 steel bars, suppliers usually keep inventory, but custom sizes may require short lead times. Hot-rolled 1018 steel plates are also easy to procure, though thickness availability depends on mill production schedules.
If tighter tolerances or better machinability are needed, AISI 12L14 is a common alternative in China, though it lacks weldability compared to 1018.
