H13 is the chromium-molybdenum-vanadium hot work steel from ASTM A681. About 5 % chromium gives it resistance to thermal fatigue (heat checking), while vanadium forms hard carbides that keep the surface from eroding at working temperature — the combination that makes it the standard grade for aluminium die-casting dies worldwide.

Values below are typical. For tooling we normally deliver annealed and you harden after rough machining; where you need pre-hardened blocks we quench and temper to your target hardness before shipment.

Die casting — aluminium die-casting dies, inserts, cores and sprue bushings
Extrusion — extrusion tooling, liners and stems for aluminium and copper
Hot forging — forging dies and die inserts for hammer and press lines
Plastics and general tooling — injection mold cavities, hot shear blades, gripper rails
H13 is supplied annealed so you can machine it easily, then hardened from 1000–1030 °C and double tempered in the 540–600 °C range to reach 44–52 HRC. Double tempering is important: it transforms retained austenite and stabilises dimension, which is what keeps die inserts from distorting in service. We can also supply pre-hardened and rough-machined blocks so you go straight to finish machining.
Most suppliers in this business are traders who subcontract everything. We run our own processes, which means shorter cycles and one point of accountability when something needs fixing.
Heat treatment shop — quenching and tempering to your target hardness, with furnace charts recorded per batch
Machining shop — rough turning, peeling and cutting to length, so your bar arrives ready for finish machining
Testing — ultrasonic per ASTM A388 / EN 10228-3, hardness mapping across the section, tensile and impact testing
Certification — EN 10204 3.1 as standard, 3.2 available with third-party witness (ABS, BV, CCS, GL)
Export packing — bundled, end-capped and rust-protected for sea freight
A1: They are the same family: 1.2344 (X40CrMoV5-1) is the DIN equivalent and SKD61 the JIS equivalent, both matched to H13 in composition. Minor differences exist in the allowed ranges — if your tooling drawing specifies one grade, send it to us and we will confirm the closest supply option.
A2: Yes. We quench and temper in our own furnace shop to 44–52 HRC or any intermediate range, with hardness verified at multiple points and furnace charts recorded per batch. Pre-hardened blocks arrive ready for finish machining.
A3: EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate is included as standard, showing full heat analysis and mechanical test results. If you need 3.2 certification we arrange third-party inspection with ABS, BV, CCS or GL.
A4: Yes. Our machining shop does rough turning, peeling, milling and cutting to length, so you receive material close to final dimensions and save machining time on your side.
Send us your diameter, length, quantity, required hardness and destination port. You will get a quotation with the full technical proposal within 24 hours.
